Magazine advert analysis

In order to get a better idea of what to include on the magazine advertisement for our band, I researched 4 magazine advertisements. I analysed the font, colour scheme, layout and purpose of each advertisement and noted the common elements of all the advertisements in order to highlight what we could include on our poster.

Album cover analysis

I was unable to find a digipak for any indie bands therefore I had to use my initiative and analyse 3 album covers in order to get a better idea of what to include on our cover.

How would a concept/narrative/performance video meet the needs of this audience?

How do the song’s lyrics meet the needs and desires of your target audience?

STITCHES- THE DYKEENIES

The song's lyrics highlight the struggle faced with getting up when you fall down. The song highlights the pain and suffering one feels when they have been knocked down however it also emphasises the fact that you cannot stop- life will go on and the world will keep on turning. The words and meaning of the song will relate to our target audience as many have been through pain and many believe that they will never achieve the impossible. The song is a motivation for our target audience as the band are encouraging their listeners to be confident and move on with their life and not be held back by small trials.
Below are some comments from listeners on Youtube:

The above comments demonstrate how the lyrics of the song meet the needs of the target audience. Also, one user relates their own experience to the meaning of the song. The fact that audiences are relating their own experiences to this song means that the band were successful in communicating the song's meaning to audiences.

What are the likes/dislikes of your target audience? How are these reflected in other music videos from your chosen genre?

Our target audience like:
  • Going to gigs
  • Simple music videos that do not rely on mainstream gimmicks to achieve status
  • Listening to music stations that play their kind of music (XFM and Radio 1-Rock/Indie)
  • Shopping (Indie bands have a cool, laid-back simple image that appeals to the younger generation so, naturally, fans would like to emulate their style in order to portray their dedication)Attending festivals (Reading, Wizard, Wireless)
  • Socialising with friends
  • Watching films

The "Underdog" video by Kasabian is a black and white live performance video. In the video, we see the fans listening to the gig and from the picture it's clear that the fan base consists of an audience aged 17-30. The possible age of the audience in the Kasabian video fits the description of our target audience as our target audience like going to gigs, festivals and socialising with friends and are closer to our age therefore we know their likes and dislikes better because we can relate to them.

As stated above, our target audience like music videos that are simple and rely on the band's image and music rather than mainstream gimmicks that only cover up the band's lacking energy, this is demonstrated by Snow Patrol in the music video for "Run". Simple music videos and lyrics that touch upon deep social issues are popular with our target audience as the audience can relate to the lyrics on a more emotional level. For example, "Run" is about having confidence to move on with life and not let anything stop you.

"Stitches" lyrics

THE DYKEENIES LYRICS – STITCHES

When you feel so weak
and you scratch those stitches
reminding you of why you fell away after yourself

And you cant hold still
and you gamble more than enough
you cant depend on them

Still, I adore the taste of rain
and the bouncing down on the ground
it reminds me

Make a wish tonight
all the stars are out
the sound of your hands were not out of reach cause

It’s not out of reach
this is not out of reach

You feel so weak
you burst those stitches
reminding you of just why you felt so cruel

Still, I adore the taste of rain
and the bouncing down on the ground
it reminds me!

Still, I adore the taste of rain
and the bouncing down on the ground
you cant depend on them

Make a wish tonight
all the stars are out
the sound of your hands were not out of reach just…

Make a wish tonight
all the stars are out
the sound of your hands were not out of reach cause
it’s not out, its not not out of reach

they build you up, they build you up

Don’t , don’t run away dear (4x)

Still, I adore the taste of rain
and the bouncing down on the ground
and the crackle of water well in the mark of all your…

Make a wish tonight
all the stars are out
it’s out of your hand but not out of reach
it’s out of your hand but not out of reach

Finding the right song...

To find the perfect song to use in our music video, my group and I did a lot of research on various websites. We used websites such as:
We used these websites to find the right song that fit in with all our tastes and along the way we compiled a list of possible songs:
  • The Dykeenies - Stitches
  • Tyler Ward - Live Like We're Dying (Kris Allen cover)
  • Out Like A Lion - Jealousy is the Devil's Best Friend
  • Acoustic Jim - Indecision
  • Alan Powell - Chasing Time
We rated all the above songs out of 10 and then picked out the song that came in the top three. These songs were:

  • The Dykeenies - Stitches
  • Tyler Ward - Live Like We're Dying (Kris Allen cover)
  • Out Like A Lion - Jealousy is the Devil's Best Friend
In order to figure out which song is the best out of the three, we made a pros and cons list to help us in making our decision:
By comparing all of our choices we found that "Stitches" by The Dykeenies was the most popular as the lyrics were very touching and inspirational and it would be easier to do a narrative/performance music video. Furthermore, the fact that they are relatively unknown will make it easier for us to gain their permisson to use their song. Even though Kris Allen was our second most popular choice, it would be hard to gain permission to use his song due to songs right's belonging to Sony Music Entertainment.

Preparation Work

To prepare us for in depth analysis of genre's and music video's, our teacher gave us the task to analyse Pink, an artist. We analysed her image, the lyrics of "Who Knew in order to come up with ideas for our own music video.
